Common Questions

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses a thin monofilament needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular, and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments.

It's a technique used to treat dysfunctions in skeletal muscle, fascia, and connective tissue, and diminish persistent peripheral nociceptive input, and reduce or restore impairments of body structure and function leading to improved activity and participation. It is not acupuncture.

How does dry needling work?

Dry needling works by targeting "trigger points," which are tight, knotted areas within muscles that can cause pain and restricted movement. When the thin needle is inserted into a trigger point, it creates a small, localized twitch response. This helps to:

  • Release muscle tension: The twitch response helps to relax the contracted muscle fibers, reducing tightness and pain.

  • Improve blood flow: Increased blood flow to the area helps deliver oxygen and nutrients, promoting healing.

  • Decrease pain signals: Dry needling can help to "reset" the nervous system, reducing the transmission of pain signals to the brain.

  • Restore normal muscle function: By releasing trigger points and improving blood flow, dry needling helps restore optimal muscle length and function.

Is dry needling safe?

Yes, dry needling is a safe procedure when performed by a trained and certified practitioner. At SKYE Physiotherapy, our therapists have undergone extensive training and certification in dry needling techniques.

We use sterile, single-use needles and follow strict safety protocols to minimize any risks. The most common side effects are minor and temporary, such as soreness or bruising at the needle insertion site.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of dry needling sessions needed varies depending on the individual, the severity of their condition, and their response to treatment. Some people experience significant relief after just one or two sessions, while others may require a series of treatments.

During your initial consultation, we will assess your condition and develop a personalized treatment plan, including an estimated number of sessions. We will continually monitor your progress and adjust the plan as needed. It is common to see improvement around 5 sessions.
